By now, you’ve hopefully heard that 2G communications are going away, or the phrase “2G sunset.” But what does that mean for you and your security system? Below, I will highlight key information that will help you make wise decisions moving forward.
WH Security is proud to be on the leading edge of education, specifically around the new technologies coming to the world of security systems. Back in August 2012, AT&T announced the shutdown of their 2G wireless network. Over the next 4 years, the 2G wireless network underwent upgrades and the sunset of the 2G network is slated for January 1, 2017.
Technology is rapidly changing and getting more reliable. The goal of upgrading the 2G network is to keep up with the increasing demand for data. Simplistically speaking, AT&T can shut down the 2G network and use the same space for 3G, increasing the data capacity more than 100-fold.
So what now? WH Security identified and notified all customers who have 2G cellular communication devices via letters, phone calls, newsletters and emails to make sure our valued customers are aware of the 2G sunset. Once January 1, 2017, comes there will be no further communication on alarm signals to the central station. The security system will still work on a local only basis but again, alarm signals will not reach the central station. It is important that action is taken to upgrade to newer technology so alarm signals securely come to us.
If you are using 2G technology for your security system, please contact us as soon as possible so we can tailor a communication device that continues to deliver the peace of mind you are accustomed to prior to the sunset of 2G communications. We have several options as it relates to equipment and payment plans to best suit your needs. Your patronage is important to us and we look forward to working with you for years to come.
Merry Christmas from all of us at WH Security!
