It’s fair season and there are several safety measures you can take to make sure your family is safe if you get separated. This is especially important when attending larger events like the Minnesota State Fair where the crowds are huge and there is a lot of stimulation for children.
- Take a photo of everyone in your group before you leave home or as you enter the festivities. That way, you’ll have a record of what everyone is wearing and know what to look for if someone goes missing.
- The Minnesota State Fair offers free identification wristbands at dozens of information booths located around the fairgrounds. Pick one up as you enter to help reunite lost children or vulnerable adults.
- Teach your children who to look for when they can’t find you, such as a police officer or someone working at the event. Or, if children are old enough, establish a special family meeting place for everyone to go to if someone gets separated.
- The minute you can’t find your child, shout out their basic description. For example, shout “We have a missing 6-year-old boy named John. He has short brown hair. He is wearing a red t-shirt with a dinosaur on it and black shorts.” By shouting this out repeatedly, you have expanded your search because everyone in the vicinity will hear you and help you look.
- Get help from a fair employee. The Minnesota State Fair and other larger fairs has a missing child protocol that they can quickly put into action. They train for these situations. Use them.
- Keep in mind the places you have already been that you child might have returned to, or things your child had been asking to do before you were separated. That information will be helpful for the searcher.
